Azalea Sands One of the first North Strand golf courses, the Gene Hamm design opened in 1972, exposing golfers to the virtues of North Myrtle Beach via a layout that is long on playability and hospitality. Azalea Sands will celebrate its 40th birthday this year, and golfers can expect to find a course that’s as strong as ever. Azalea Sands prides itself on providing a player-friendly experience and that includes a layout with no homes, condos or backyards. It’s golf from the first tee to the 19th hole, and a foursome can be reasonably expected to finish in less than four hours. Tees Starting @ $31

Black Bear Don’t be fooled by the fierce name; Black Bear provides a good test of golf, but the layout has emerged as a Grand Strand favorite based on its inviting nature. The facility emphasizes customer service and gives visitors a heavy dose of Southern charm, even offering a Friday pig roast for players at certain times of year. But it’s Black Bear’s course that keeps golf lovers coming back. With no homes on the course, the fairways are exceedingly generous and the champion Bermuda greens impeccably maintained. Part of the layout’s charm lies in the diversity of its challenge. The par 4s range from 352 to 454 yards – from the tips – so the types of shots, particularly off the tee, vary. The Tom Jackson design features 23 lakes, but the course has only two forced carries and much of the water enhances the course’s visuals without overwhelming players. Tees Starting @ $34

Burning Ridge On the heels of a 2005 renovation project that enhanced nearly every facet of the course, Burning Ridge ascended in the eyes of golfers looking for a quality round and a great value. The layout is defined by its mounded and tree-lined fairways, and elevated greens that enjoy ample protection from bunkers. Playing smart, percentage golf is rewarded, but Burning Ridge doesn’t force players into a U.S. Open-type slog where the only way to manage the round is hitting fairways and greens. It’s a fun golf course, highlighted by a pair of par 5s – no. 7 and no. 15 – that play less than 485 and give daring players a shot at eagle. Tees Starting @ $37

Indian Wells  Voted 2004-2005 Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association, golfers playing Indian Wells continue to rave about the appearance and layout, which reminds many of a traditional U.S. Open-style course. Indian Wells is a course that places a premium on creative shot-making and rewards the daring. Tees Starting @ $46
