Following a historic storm, numerous Myrtle Beach golf courses are open and nearly every course will be open for what should be a busy fall weekend.

“I think players will be pleasantly surprised at the conditions, given what everyone at the beach has gone through,” said Dave Genevro, general manager at Barefoot Resort, home of the four of the area’s premier courses. “I’ve been here 15 years and I saw water in places I’ve never seen it before, but conditions are going to better than people expect, based on what they saw on TV.” The vast majority of the remaining courses are expected to welcome golfers back on Thursday morning.

The King’s North Course at Myrtle Beach National will have to wait up to a few more days because it was among the courses with cart path damage. A 20-foot portion of cart path was washed out and must be repaired. And Indian Wells Golf is still under a significant amount of water and probably will not reopen unit Saturday or Sunday.

Most courses just have to drain in order to reopen, and some golfers may have to navigate closed and damaged roads to reach courses. There’s water in every ditch, in every fairway and every bunker. There are massive amounts of water lying everywhere. Once the water recedes and any necessary repairs are made, there should be no lingering or long-term damage to the condition of the courses from the flooding. The grass should regain its health rather quickly. Some areas of the country would have to deal with a layer of silt topping the grass following a flood, but the courses here generally doesn’t have that issue.
